Alabama Shakespeare Festival

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is the fifth largest Shakespeare festival in the world and is distinguished as the only American theater invited to fly the flag of England's Royal Shakespeare Company Operating 42 weeks a year, the festival offers world class contemporary and classical theatre productions featuring top actors from Actor's Equity Association, the union for professional actors and stage managers.

Directions: Take I-85 East to exit #6. Take the first off ramp for East Boulevard and follow the signs for Woodmere Boulevard. At the end of the ramp, turn right. At the second light, turn left onto Woodmere Boulevard. Go 0.5 miles to the theatre entrance.

Montgomery Trolley Tours

 

The world's first Electric Trolley System was introduced in Montgomery in 1886. The trolley is still running today and is an excellent way to tour the historical district visiting sites such as the state capitol, the Alabama War Memorial, Old Alabama Town, the Rosa Parks Library and Museum, the Hank Williams Museum. The trolley passes each stop every 20 minutes. The fare is $0.25 per boarding and a day pass is available for $1. Daily passes are available at the Union Station visitors center.

Directions: From the North, take I-65 South to exit #172 and bear left on Dickerson Street. Go 1 block and turn left on Herron Street. Go 0.6 miles and turn left on Moulton Street. Go 0.3 miles arriving at 300 Water Street. From the Southwest, take I-65 North to exit #172 and continue on North Holt Street. Go 1 block and turn right on Bell Street. Go 0.4 miles and turn left on Moulton Street. Go 0.2 miles arriving at 300 Water Street. From the Southeast, take US-231 North to I-85. Take I-85 West to I-65. Take I-65 North and follow the directions above.

Alabama State Capitol

This ornately decorated example of Greek Revival architecture has served as the seat of state government since 1851 and also served as the first capitol of the Confederate States of American until the capital was moved to Richmond in May of 1861. The interior of the capitol dome is decorated with 8 large murals depicting major incidents in Alabama history including the first meeting of DeSoto and Chief Tuscaloosa, and the surrender of the Creek nation to General Andrew Jackson, and the inauguration of President Jefferson Davis. The capitol is open Monday through Friday, 9AM to 5PM, and Saturday, 9AM to 4PM.

Cambrian Ridge

Cambrian Ridge, located 47 miles from Montgomery near Greenville, is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The course features 27 championship holes and a 9 hole short course. See "Alabama: A Golfer's Paradise" for more information about the golf trail.

Directions: From Montgomery, take I-65 to exit #130 and bear right on Fort Dale Road (AL-185). Go 2.4 miles and bear left on Braggs Road (AL-263). Go 0.9 miles and turn left on Sherling Lake Road (CR-44). Go 1.3 miles and turn right on Cahaba Road (CR-73). Go 0.2 miles and turn right on Sunbelt Parkway.

Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill, located 10 miles North of Montgomery in Prattville, is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The course features 54 championship holes.

Directions: From Montgomery, take I-65 North to exit #179 and turn left onto Cobbs Ford Road. Go 0.5 miles to the next light and turn left on Highway 6. Go .2 miles to the course entrance.
